How Santiago’s Las Condes Community Has Improved their Quality of Life through IOT

The Las Condes community in Santiago, Chile with a population of approximately 330,000 is starting to see the benefit from rolling out IOT technology.  The forward-thinking city administration began the deployment of Smart technology in 2018 with Minebea Mitsumi’s IOT Division Paradox Engineering (PT DOT’s Partner).

Below are 3 key take-aways from the interview conducted with the Mayor of Las Condes, Daniela Penaloza Ramos,

1. Savings from Smart Lighting: The initial scope of the project was to deploy 45,000 smart street lights with the objective of energy efficiency and sustainability as well as other broader impacts beyond smart lighting. By transitioning to a smart street light solution, the city has reduced its energy spend by over 25% which it has then re-invested in other sustainability projects for Las Condes
2. Smart Traffic Management: Integrated with the smart lighting solutions, Las Condes installed public transportation sensors that enabled to give real-time information on traffic conditions and potential traffic jams, and help reroute people when required. In addition, air quality sensors have been installed which though an app inform people the air-quality level.
3. Improving Safety for the Residents: Las Condes has integrated 1,900 cameras into the network with analytical software which recognizes more than 50 potential situations that lead to crimes. All this information can then be provided to the Police for action, while the AI capability continues to improve to identify new situations which can be added based on data collected.  This technology brings a higher level of security for the residents and visitors to Las Condes.
